Gary Oldman was rumored to be cast, but was replaced by Kevin Kline
Narrative
Follow Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist whose work is based on exposing the transgressions of long-respected institutions. Damn! Little did I know what an experience I was in for when I started watching this AppleTV+ limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.
Basically, this is a revenge story
"Disclaimer" based on the novel of the same name by Renée Knight, written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past come out in an alarming way, forcing her to confront her past that is ruining her entire life. This was a masterfully told story that took us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience was shown (sometimes vividly) the “events”; About Catherine’s past.
Note: There are some pretty graphic depictions of sex/intimacy in various episodes
Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here, and Kline has a good performance as well. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did it. Despite a couple/several minor complaints, I recommend this series if you like character dramas with added tension/intrigue.
Video review coming soon
This isn’t fast paced and it took me about half an episode (about 30 minutes) before I finally got “hooked” on the story. But I’m glad I stayed. "What we do in the shadows" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
